Why is Water Dripping from My AC? 5 Common Causes & Fixes

Posted on : 13-Jan-2026

Is your Air Conditioner leaking water inside your room? Nothing ruins a peaceful summer afternoon faster than seeing water dripping down your wall, damaging your expensive paint or furniture.

At Delhi Daily Service, we often get calls from worried customers asking, "My AC is cooling, but why is it leaking water?"

Don't panic! Water leakage is one of the most common AC problems. While it looks alarming, the causes are usually simple. Here are the top 5 reasons why your AC might be leaking and how you can fix it.

1. A Clogged Drain Pipe (The #1 Culprit)

This is the most common reason for water leakage. Over time, the drain pipe that carries water out of your room gets blocked with dust, dirt, algae, or fungus. What happens: When the exit is blocked, the water backs up and starts overflowing from the indoor unit instead of going outside. The Fix: You can try to unclog the drain line using a thin wire or a wet/dry vacuum. If the blockage is deep, professional servicing is recommended.

2. Dirty Air Filters

When was the last time you cleaned your AC filters? If the filters are choked with dust, airflow to the evaporator coil gets blocked. What happens: The coil gets too cold and freezes over. When you turn off the AC, that ice melts rapidly, producing more water than the drain pan can handle, causing it to overflow. The Fix: Clean your air filters every 2–4 weeks. It improves cooling and prevents leakage.

3. Broken or Rusted Drain Pan

Underneath your AC’s indoor unit, there is a tray (drain pan) designed to catch condensed water. What happens: In older units, this pan can get rusted or cracked. If the pan is damaged, water will drip straight through the crack onto your floor. The Fix: This usually requires replacing the drain pan. You will need a technician to dismantle the unit and install a new one.

4. Improper Installation (Leveling Issues)

For water to drain properly, your split AC or window AC needs to be mounted with a very slight tilt towards the drain pipe. What happens: If the AC is perfectly flat or tilted in the wrong direction, gravity won't be able to pull the water out. Instead, it will pool inside the unit and eventually leak into the room. The Fix: Check the alignment of your unit. If it looks uneven, call our experts at Delhi Daily Service to re-install or adjust the mounting plate.

5. Low Refrigerant (Gas Leakage)

Believe it or not, low gas levels can cause water leakage. What happens: Low refrigerant pressure lowers the pressure in the AC system, causing the evaporator coil to freeze (similar to dirty filters). When the ice melts, water leaks out. The Fix: If your AC is leaking water AND not cooling effectively, you likely have a gas leak. This requires professional repair and gas refilling.

Conclusion: When to Call a Pro?

If you have cleaned the filters and checked the drain pipe but the water is still dripping, it’s time to call the experts. Ignoring a leak can lead to:

  • Wall damage and peeling paint.

  • Mold and fungus growth in your room.

  • Short circuits in the AC’s PCB.
