There is nothing more frustrating than turning on your air conditioner during a sweltering summer afternoon, only to be greeted by warm air—or worse, a complete system shutdown. If you find yourself repeatedly calling for repairs season after season, your air conditioner isn't just "unlucky." Recurring breakdowns and a lack of cooling are usually signs of underlying mechanical stress, poor maintenance, or improper repairs.
Understanding why your AC keeps failing is the first step toward a permanent, cost-effective solution. Here are the top reasons why your air conditioner repeatedly breaks down and why it stops cooling efficiently.
The most common reason for a sudden drop in cooling efficiency is a choked air filter. Over time, indoor dust, pet dander, and pollution accumulate on the mesh filter.
Why it stops cooling: When air cannot pass through the filter, the evaporator coils inside the room unit cannot absorb heat from your room.
Why it causes breakdowns: Restricted airflow causes the internal coils to freeze over with ice. When this ice melts, it can cause water leakage and force the compressor to work twice as hard, eventually leading to a permanent compressor burnout.
Refrigerant—often referred to as AC gas—is the chemical fluid responsible for cooling the air. A healthy air conditioner does not "consume" refrigerant; if your gas levels are low, there is a leak in the system.
Why it stops cooling: Without enough refrigerant, the heat exchange process fails completely, and the AC will blow lukewarm air regardless of how low you set the temperature.
Why it causes breakdowns: Simply refilling the gas without finding and brazing (welding) the leak means the system will fail again within a few weeks or months. Furthermore, running an AC on low refrigerant overheats the compressor, leading to the most expensive repair an AC can face.
While you enjoy the cool air inside, your outdoor unit is working hard to reject heat into the outside atmosphere. Because the outdoor unit is exposed to severe heat, dust, rain, and pollution, the condenser coils quickly get blanketed in grime.
Why it stops cooling: A thick layer of dirt acts as an insulator, trapping heat inside the system instead of releasing it outdoors.
Why it causes breakdowns: To compensate for the trapped heat, the compressor runs continuously at extreme pressures and temperatures until it automatically trips due to thermal overload—or breaks down entirely.
Air conditioners require a massive surge of electrical energy to start the compressor and fans. The run capacitor stores and delivers this electrical jump-start.
Why it causes breakdowns: Frequent power cuts, voltage spikes, and running the AC during extreme grid load can fry the capacitor or damage the Printed Circuit Board (PCB). If the capacitor fails, you may hear a humming noise from the outdoor unit, but the compressor will not start, resulting in zero cooling.
Many recurring AC problems are caused by superficial servicing. A basic water wash of the outer filters is not enough to maintain a modern split or window AC. Over time, sludge and bacteria build up deep inside the blower wheels and drain trays.
