Is Your AC Leaking Water? Common Causes and How to Fix It

Posted on : 02-Jul-2026

There is nothing quite like walking into a cool, air-conditioned room during a scorching summer day in Delhi. But that relief can quickly turn into frustration when you notice water dripping from your AC unit onto your floor or walls.

An air conditioner leaking water is one of the most common issues homeowners face. Not only is it annoying, but ignoring it can lead to expensive water damage, ruined paint, and electrical hazards.

So, why is your AC crying? Let’s break down the most common reasons behind AC water leakage and what you can do about it.

1. A Clogged Condensate Drain Line (The Most Common Culprit)

Your AC removes moisture from the air as it cools your room. This moisture collects in a drain pan and flows outside through a condensate drain line. Over time, dust, dirt, and even algae can build up inside this small pipe, causing a blockage. When the water has nowhere to go, it backs up and spills out of the indoor unit.

2. Dirty Air Filters

When was the last time you cleaned your AC filters? If the air filter is choked with dust, it restricts warm airflow over the evaporator coil. Without that warm air, the coil gets too cold and literally freezes over with ice. When the AC turns off and the ice melts, it creates more water than the drain pan can handle, leading to an indoor leak.

3. Low Refrigerant (AC Gas Leak)

Similar to a dirty filter, if your AC is low on refrigerant gas, the pressure drops, causing the evaporator coils to freeze. As the ice melts, it overflows the drip pan. If you notice your AC is leaking water and it isn't cooling the room effectively, low gas is likely the problem.

4. A Damaged or Rusted Drain Pan

Older air conditioners, especially those that are 5 to 10 years old, can suffer from wear and tear. The drain pan that catches the condensation can rust, crack, or corrode over time. If there is a hole in the pan, the water will simply drip right through it before it ever reaches the drain pipe.

5. Improper Installation

If you recently had a new AC installed or moved to a new room and it started leaking immediately, the installation might be flawed. Window ACs need to be tilted slightly backward toward the outside so gravity can pull the water away. If it is completely flat or tilted forward, the water will spill inside your room.

What Should You Do If Your AC is Leaking?

Step 1: Turn off your AC immediately to prevent further water damage or electrical shorts. Step 2: Check and clean the air filters. If they are dirty, wash them and let them dry completely before putting them back. Step 3: Call in the professionals.

While cleaning a filter is easy, unclogging drain lines, fixing gas leaks, or replacing broken parts requires professional tools and expertise.
